Overview
HelloMenu (“we”, “our”, “the app”) is a menu translation app designed to help travelers understand restaurant menus. We take your privacy seriously and collect only the minimum data necessary to provide our service.
Data We Collect
Camera Photos
When you scan a menu, photos are captured by your device's camera and sent to our server (Supabase Edge Function) for translation. The photos are forwarded to Anthropic's Claude AI for real-time processing. Menu images are not stored on our servers. They are processed in memory and discarded immediately after translation.
Location Data
If you grant location permission, your approximate location (city and country) is used locally on your device for:
- Automatic currency conversion
- Restaurant context in translations (e.g., regional cuisine awareness)
- Tagging saved menus with location for your travel history
Your precise location is never sent to our servers. Only the city/country name may be included in translation requests to provide cultural context.
Email Address
If you choose to sign in (via Sign in with Apple or email magic link), your email address is stored securely in Supabase Auth. Sign-in is optional — the app works without an account.
Dietary Preferences
Your dietary preferences and allergen settings are stored locally on your device using UserDefaults. This data never leaves your device.
Translation History & Saved Menus
Your saved menus, translation history, and menu images are stored locally on your device using SwiftData and the device file system. This data is not synced to any server.
Third-Party Services
Anthropic (Claude AI)
Menu images and text are sent to Anthropic's Claude AI via our Supabase Edge Function for translation processing. Anthropic's privacy policy governs their handling of this data. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train their models.
RevenueCat
If you purchase a subscription, RevenueCat processes your subscription data (purchase receipts, subscription status). Payment is handled entirely by Apple — we never see your payment information.
Supabase
We use Supabase for authentication (if you sign in) and as a secure proxy for API calls. Supabase stores your email and authentication tokens if you create an account.
Data We Do NOT Collect
- We do not track your browsing or app usage analytics
- We do not use advertising SDKs or trackers
- We do not collect device identifiers for advertising
- We do not sell your data to third parties. Ever.
Data Retention
Menu images are processed in real-time and never stored on our servers. Authentication data is retained in Supabase until you delete your account. All local data (saved menus, preferences, translation history) remains on your device and is deleted when you uninstall the app.
Your Rights (GDPR)
If you are located in the European Economic Area, you have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Request correction of inaccurate data
- Request deletion of your data
- Export your data in a portable format
- Object to or restrict processing of your data
To delete your account and all associated data, use the “Delete Account” option in the app's Profile settings, or contact us at the email below.
Children's Privacy
HelloMenu is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. We will notify you of significant changes through the app or by updating the date at the top of this page.
